2026, a meeting was held between the Municipal Secretary of Paralimni \u2013 Deryneia Municipality, Ms Gabriella Gabriel, the Deputy Mayor of Frenaros, Mr Costas Michael, the Executive Chairman of the Cyprus Sustainable Tourism Initiative (CSTI), Mr Philippos Drousiotis, and CSTI representative for the Famagusta District, Ms Elena Michael, with the aim of discussing practical steps for reducing the use of single-use plastics in the Municipality&#8217;s facilities.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The meeting took place within the framework of the &#8220;Destination Zero Waste Cyprus and Greece \u2013 Keep our Sand and Sea Plastic-Free&#8221; programme, an initiative by TUI Care Foundation and CSTI. It aims to prevent and reduce plastic pollution in coastal and tourist areas of Cyprus through partnerships with local authorities, municipalities, businesses, schools and communities. The actions to be implemented focus on reducing the use of single-use plastics in municipal facilities, informing and raising awareness among citizens, and promoting sustainable practices in the tourism sector.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Within the framework of the collaboration, the next steps for the Municipality&#8217;s gradual transition to more sustainable practices were discussed, with emphasis on the adoption of environmentally friendly alternatives. Among the measures considered were the assessment of the current use of single-use plastics in municipal facilities, the adoption of a policy for their gradual reduction and elimination, and their replacement with reusable or other sustainable alternatives.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">At the same time, actions were examined to strengthen recycling and the proper separation of waste across all municipal premises, promote sustainable procurement practices, and further digitalise administrative procedures with the aim of reducing the consumption of materials and packaging.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Particular emphasis was placed on the active participation of municipal staff, citizens and local businesses through awareness-raising activities, educational programmes and cooperation with the local community. The implementation of single-use plastic-free practices at municipal meetings, events and activities was also discussed, together with the establishment of measurable targets and mechanisms for monitoring progress.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This initiative is a continuation of actions already implemented by Paralimni \u2013 Deryneia Municipality and CSTI within the framework of a long-standing and productive partnership promoting environmental responsibility and sustainable development.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Among the actions already implemented are the designation of Frenaros Primary School as a \u201cSchool for Change: Leading the Plastic-Free Movement\u201d through the installation of a water dispenser to reduce the use of single-use plastic bottles, as well as the donation of reusable thermos bottles to students through the Project implemented by CSTI.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In addition, a waste assessment and analysis was conducted at the school to identify opportunities for further waste reduction. A beach clean-up and waste inventory activity was also organised, engaging both students and teachers in monitoring and addressing marine litter while raising environmental awareness within the school community.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">At municipal level, two &#8220;Plastic-Free&#8221; beaches have already been established as part of broader efforts to reduce plastic waste and strengthen the environmental awareness of both residents and visitors.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Cooperation with local authorities is considered crucial for achieving meaningful and measurable results. Municipalities, as bodies with direct contact with citizens and local communities, can play a central role in adopting and promoting sustainable practices in their day-to-day operations.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The transition to a model with fewer single-use plastics is not only an environmental necessity but also an important investment in the sustainable development of Cyprus&#8217; tourism product.
