Embedding Everyday Habits for a Plastic-Free Future
The Schools for Change: Leading the Plastic Free Movement concept, is part of the Keep our Sand and Sea Plastic Free, Destination Zero Waste in Cyprus and Greece project, an initiative of TUI Care Foundation and Cyprus Sustainable Tourism Initiative (CSTI).
This programme is proudly supported by Cyprus Environment Foundation, thanks to funding received from The Conservation Collective through their Depeche Mode & Hublot Memento Mori Tour charity partnership.
Overview
Through its active participation in the programme, Pegeia Primary School has taken a practical and consistent approach to reducing single-use plastics and embedding sustainable habits into everyday school life.
The school’s journey focuses on turning environmental awareness into simple, repeatable actions that can be maintained over time. Rather than treating sustainability as a one-off educational topic, Pegeia Primary School has worked to integrate it into daily routines, school culture, and student behaviour.
Building Environmental Understanding
The programme began with educational activities designed to help students understand the scale and impact of plastic pollution, particularly in relation to marine and coastal environments.
Students explored:
- The environmental consequences of single-use plastics
- The connection between daily use habits and marine pollution
- The importance of reducing waste at the source
- Practical alternatives to disposable materials
These sessions helped establish a strong awareness foundation for long-term behaviour change, preparing students to take meaningful action within their school environment and beyond.
From Awareness to Practical Change
Following the educational phase, the school introduced a series of practical measures aimed at reducing plastic use and promoting more sustainable behaviours.
Key actions included:
- Installation of a water refill station and introduction of reusable water bottles
- Waste audits to identify key sources of litter and explore sustainable alternatives
- Beach clean-up activities connecting students with local coastal environments
- Upcycling workshops transforming waste materials into creative outputs
- Collaborative environmental projects and efforts
These interventions helped shift daily routines towards more sustainable practices, reinforcing behaviour change through repetition and accessibility.
School Culture and Behavioural Change
Over time, these combined actions have contributed to a noticeable shift in school culture, where sustainable practices are increasingly part of everyday behaviour rather than isolated initiatives.
Key developments include:
- Students learned about plastic pollution and received reusable water bottles.
- They participated in a waste audit to assess the types and quantities of litter, identify ways to reduce waste, and develop a sustainable action plan.
- Students took part in a beach clean-up, where they learned why every small action makes a difference.
- Students created an artwork using upcycled plastic.
- A closing event brought together students and partners to unveil the artwork and present the initiative’s activities and achievements.
Pegeia Primary School demonstrates how consistent, practical action can gradually transform school culture. Through its participation in the Schools for Change initiative, the school continues to nurture a generation of students who understand that environmental change begins with simple, everyday choices!
