The “Tourism Cares” initiative mobilizes more than 50 cleanup events across Cyprus ahead of World Tourism Day 2024
The “Keep our Sand and Sea Plastic Free” Project is part of TUI Care Foundation’s Destination Zero Waste Programme, and is implemented in partnership with the Cyprus Sustainable Tourism Initiative (CSTI), focuses on reducing single-use plastics in the coastal areas of Cyprus. In collaboration with TUI, the project and its partners are thrilled to introduce the initiative: “Tourism Cares: Unite for a Cleaner Cyprus”. With more than 50 registered cleanup events already confirmed, this campaign is mobilizing tourism businesses across Cyprus to take action against plastic pollution and littering, demonstrating a strong commitment to sustainability within the tourism sector.
As we approach World Tourism Day on September 27, 2024, the tourism community of Cyprus has shown impressive engagement, signaling that the island’s tourism industry is not only thriving but also deeply invested in creating a cleaner and more sustainable environment.
Tourism Cares: Unite for a Cleaner Cyprus
The initiative calls on hotels, resorts, restaurants, and other tourism businesses to organize beach or public area cleanups, involving both their guests and staff, to reduce litter and raise awareness about the importance of sustainability in tourism. With the growing awareness of environmental challenges, this large-scale cleanup aims to inspire lasting change by reducing the impact of littering on our beautiful coastal areas.

We are overwhelmed by the tremendous response from the tourism industry in Cyprus and as Philippos Drousiotis, Chairman of the Cyprus Sustainable Tourism Initiative (CSTI) said “This initiative is more than just a cleanup; it’s about creating awareness and fostering long-term sustainable practices within the tourism sector. It’s heartening to see such a high level of engagement”.
Together, let’s make Cyprus a beacon of sustainable tourism by working hand in hand for a cleaner, plastic free environment.
